The true story of a group of people who climbed this mountain and the tragedies that happened in 1996

There are a lot of ways for people to take risks these days. There is sky diving, bungee jumping and many others way to push yourself to the limits. But one of the biggest challenges out there is mountain climbing. It is something that people have done for many years and depending on the mountain not everyone has been successful in their attempt to conquer such a foe. In 1996 a group of people came together to take on Everest and this film tells in vivid detail what happened to them.

The movie begins by telling the audience a bit of a history about Mount Everest. It is detailed and gives a good backdrop for where the film plans on taking you. Jump to 1996 when a group of men and woman decide to climb this huge dangerous mountain. It is a routine climb and there is nothing that seems to make it special in any way. It has been done many times by Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) and he has taken every precaution to make sure his team goes up and down this mountain safely. Scott Fisher (Jake Gyllenhaal) works for another expedition team and lives life a bit simpler but is confident he will get everyone on his team up and down with no problems along the way. The team consists of Beck Weathers (Josh Brolin), Doug Hansen (John Hawkes) and John Krakauer who is a well known journalist. They also have Yasuko Namba (Naoko Mori) and Emily Watson (Helen Wilton) who has the job to make sure everything is going fine and that the team is informed of any changes in the weather that could put them in danger.

But on this trip there is not only a lot at stake but the risks are greater than ever. Everyone needs to be in great shape and have to do everything they can to prepare to take on this mountain head on. It is a dangerous journey and plenty of young people have never made it back. Each person has their reasons for climbing it and one thing viewers can count on is that none of them will be the same once it is over. But right away some bad things happen, and the trip takes a very dangerous turn. A huge storm comes in and it becomes a race to do everything they can to make sure these people don’t die up there. How many people are stuck at the peak? What can be done to save them in time? Just how bad will this storm turn out to be?

This is a film that is can be tough to watch. There are a lot of harrowing moments where viewers will not know what is going to happen next. This is what makes the film great though. It is never clear who will live and those who just don’t survive one of the worst storms to hit Everest in many years. The film brings a lot of heart string tugging scenes and a few that will surprise people, they will never see them coming. Once it is all over there will be a feeling of sorrow and melancholy but that is just how the story ends up unfolding. I personally was bummed by how things ended but it was a fitting end to a well written narrative.

The special effects are beautiful and do a great job of bringing this mountain to life. Whether it is day or night the fear and uncertainty of the mountain and what it will do next never leave you. The mountain is a different kind of beast, one that may look inviting but in a flash it changes its mind and brings nothing but death and destruction. The cast does everything they can to tell this tragedy in a way that is honest and at the same time brings some comedic moments so it is not too depressing. The all work well together and make it s a film that is worth seeing.

The movie has earned 8.5/10. It is a gritty thriller that many times will have people on the edge of their seats unsure of what is going to happen to the climbers next. It is not necessarily a film kids should see but older kids should enjoy it. It is a good history lesson and delivers some important life lessons that everyone should put into action.

If you are in the mood for a thrilling adventure this is a film you must see this weekend. If you want to see a good drama this is a film you will want to check out. The story is one that is told honestly and is brought in a way that does it justice. See it in IMAX if you can for the 3D and the huge screen leave nothing to the imagination and brings you closer to Everest that ever seemed possible. Go and see this film this Friday, you will enjoy this story a lot.
